Trevi is Rome’s largest Baroque fountain and the most beautiful too according to many people. Perhaps it is also the most famous fountain in the world. Trevi has featured in many movies – Roman Holiday, La Dolce Vita of Federico Fellini, Sabrina Goes to Rome, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, and Three Coins in the Fountain, and many more.

You will always find plenty of international tourists around the Trevi Fountain and many locals too. It is a custom to throw coins into the fountain – to fall in love, marry, or return to Rome. The Greek God of Sea Oceanus stands on top accompanied by Tritons and sea horses.

  • You can throw 3 coins – for a new romance, to get married to someone you love, or a return trip to Rome.

It’s a lot of fun, whether you believe these traditions or not. The movie, Three Coins in the Fountain, has played a key role in making these traditions so popular. Almost everyone who will visit the Trevi will throw coins, whatever the number.

The total value of coins thrown exceeds a million Euros every year, making Trevi the world’s most profitable fountain. The coins are taken out, and money goes for a good cause. Caritas charity receives the money to fund food and essentials for the needy.

It’s illegal to fish out coins from the fountain. It was common in the past for gangs of thieves to sweep the coins out of the fountain at night. One man was caught after 34 years of stealing coins every night.
