Iglesia de Cristo Rey is a catholic church in central Cancun. Constructed in 1972, this is a beautiful working place of worship, extremely popular with both the locals and tourists. There are 3 naves in this church. Iglesia de Cristo Rey is located between Avenue Uxmal and Avenue Coba, just opposite the Plaza de la Reforma. This is a busy neighborhood of the city where you will find many green spaces, shops, supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants.

Masses are held in the church on different days of the week and not just on Sundays. The services are very popular. Special open-air religious services are also held here sometimes for baptism, weddings, and first communions. The church also offers catechism classes. The Iglesia de Cristo Rey has an interesting and unique architecture, which is an additional attraction for many.

The Iglesia de Cristo Rey church of Cancun has a unique architecture, which you may not elsewhere in the city. The design is uniquely modern. The overall atmosphere is welcoming. Marbled interiors with big fans hanging from the ceiling! There are 3 naves, but the church is quite small in size.

How to Reach

Iglesia de Cristo Rey is located in a busy and popular area of the city. It is in the popular downtown plaza called Parque las Palapas, where you will find many food vendors, hotels, restaurants, shops, and supermarkets. You will also see street carts selling churros and other snacks.

It is just a 15-minute drive from the hotel zone of Cancun. Monumento a la Historia de Mexico is the closest bus stop. Walk for 5 minutes to reach the church from here.

There are 2 parks in the area – Lumpa Kul and park of the palapas. Lumpa Kul is often called ‘park of the hippies’.

Religious Practices

There are masses throughout the week, but of course, the Sunday mass is the most popular like other churches. It is best to arrive early as there is limited seating here. The church hears confessions 30 minutes before a mass. Special services are held on holy days like December 11th Mass to the Virgin of Guadalupe. There are English translations of readings as well. Private events like baptism, weddings, and first communions are also held at Iglesia de Cristo Ray.

You can also visit the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament throughout the day. Close to the church, you will find a small stall that sells rosaries and different religious things.
