Perfect Location For The Movies

In the movies, the farm features the ‘Shire’. When Peter Jackson, the film producer, screenwriter, and director was looking for locations for Lord of the Rings movies, he chanced upon this farm and liked it immediately. In 1998, after an aerial survey, he concluded that the farm looked ‘like a slice of ancient England’. Alan Lee, the set decorator also loved the location. He commented that it ‘looked as though Hobbits had already begun excavations’.

The location was fixed up and prepared for the filming. If you have read the books or seen the movies, you will remember the Shire where the Hobbits live. The New Zealand army helped out in building a road into the property from the main road. A huge oak tree weighing 29 tons, 37 hobbit houses in the grassy hillside, a bridge over the lake, and a mill were created to make the transformation complete.
